General Information
Date
The antiques dealer dates the object within the range of the 1st to 3rd centuries. We however suggest a later date, between the 3rd and 6th centuries, placing our objects within the Late Roman/Early Byzantine period. We believe that objects much like ours were in use for a longer span of time. Our comparanda and the research we have done on fraud, imperial ordinances, and specific units of measure (see Context) suggest a date later than the one provided by the antiques dealer.
