Set of SEven Roman WEights
Set of seven weights, all small (between 8 and 11 millimeters upon their longest face) and made of dark metal with a greenish blue patina. Four weights (1, 4, 5, and 6; see Objects for numbered image and more details) are square-shaped bricks, two (3 and 7) are rectangular-shaped bricks, and one (2) is a flattened cylindrical shape. The four heaviest weights (1, 2, 3, and 4) are incised with circular markings and shallow holes, which are centered upon their largest faces. In our research we have come the conclusion that these incisions are probably denominational marks. One weight (3) is much redder in color, maybe indicating it is composed of a different metal. The edges of all are quite rounded, possibly suggesting heavy wear and use.
